In this first chapter we are going to import some data and run an initial assessment.

1. Open InfoDrainage.
2. Under the heading ‘What would you like to do?’ select **New Design**. > Macro (inline-media-image)

Our first task is to run an initial deluge assessment to view where water would naturally accumulate across a catchment. For this we need a surface model.
3. Go to the **File **ribbon, select **Save As** and save the file as **Deluge Assessment.iddx**.
4. Load the surface information by right-clicking **Surface** in Tree View and then selecting **Load Surface**. > Macro (inline-media-image)
5. Click the **CAD** button from the **Surface Data** dialog and select the file **CADExample.dxf** from the tutorial data.> Macro (inline-media-image)
6. Click **Next.**
7. Deselect all layers (using the **Deselect All** button), then select the **Site Survey Data Layer** and click **Finish**.> Macro (inline-media-image)
8. **Easting** and **Northings** from the CAD data will appear in the elevation points. Click **OK.**> Macro (inline-media-image)
9. You will be prompted to save the model, call it **Deluge Assessment**.
10. If the Plan View remains blank, expand the Surface tree view item and tick the **Surface Colour Fill** and **Legend** boxes.> Macro (inline-media-image)

The Plan View is now shown with a thematic height map.> Macro (inline-media-image)
11. If you want to change the thematic colours, right-click the Surface item in the Tree View and select the **Display Settings**.
12. We are now going to conduct a deluge assessment. This involves applying a depth of rainfall to the catchment surface and then viewing where it will accumulate after a period of time. From the **Preliminary Sizing** ribbon, select **Deluge. **
> Macro (inline-media-image)
13. Set up the Deluge parameters as follows;> Macro (inline-media-image)

This means that the catchment surface will be covered with grid squares 4 m x 4 m. 50 mm of rainfall is then applied to this grid all in one go. The model then simulates the flow and accumulation of this rainfall, across the catchment surface for 60 minutes. The thematic map shows the depth of water after 60 minutes.
14. Once the simulation has completed, right-click the deluge from the Tree View and select the **Display Settings**.
15. Enter a minimum of 0.05 m and ensure that the thematic is restricted to this minimum.> Macro (inline-media-image)

This ensures that the assessment of where the flood water is likely to accumulate is not confused by presenting insignificant water level.

The colouring of the water depths and surface colours can be edited as you prefer. The resulting analysis should look something like this:> Macro (inline-media-image)

We can see that flood water is likely to accumulate in the West and North of the catchment. Any strategy to restrict flooding in this catchment should take that into account.
16. The next task is to load some CAD data, to provide an outline of the proposed development. Click the **CAD Data** button in the **Import** ribbon.> Macro (inline-media-image)
17. Click the **Select** button and select the file named **CADExample.dxf**. Click **Next**.> Macro (inline-media-image)
18. Select all layers apart from **Site Survey Data**. Click **Finish**. > Macro (inline-media-image)

A CAD image is loaded to the InfoDrainage workspace. It should look similar to this:> Macro (inline-media-image)
19. Go to **File** **>** **Save** to save your work.
