Object Templates allow parts of the network design process to be automated with pre-defined structures.
- Continue working on your previous file or open ID_Metric_Intro_Tutorial_Ch2.iddx.
- Create an object by going to File > Object Templates.
- Templates can be made for any object, but for this example, we will only use a Manhole template. Select Junctions then click the + icon to add a new manhole.
- InfoDrainage will prompt us for a name to save this template (use ID_Metric_Intro_Tutorial.idtx). Click Save, and the template screen will appear.
- Enter a name to identify this manhole (use Manhole Template) and enter in a Depth of 2 m. The radio button indicates which value will be auto-calculated from the other two.
- The other values are left as zero as they can be extracted from the CAD and Surface Data. Click the Cross button to exit out of the Template form. Data is automatically saved.
Drawing the Network
The network we are designing will have an outfall at the top left of the surface (with a discharge limit) and two catchment areas, at the bottom left and the middle right.
- Select the Snap option in the Plan ribbon. This precisely attaches paths to drawings depicted from the CAD data.
- Go to the Build ribbon and select Add Network. Select the Default MH template we have just created from the drop down.
- Start by left-clicking near the house and continue to connect the manholes downstream, as seen in the following image. Continue to click on each manhole position upstream as seen in the following image. Finish the path by pressing the Esc key.
- The default font size makes the view difficult to distinguish so it is useful to change the labels to make it easier to read. Right-click on the Plan and open the Display Settings form to change this. Select the Plan tab and enter 4 m as the Text Height then close the form.
- Click the Connections button in the Build ribbon, or double-click on Connections in the Tree View, and rename “Pipe(x)” to “Px" as shown below. Click OK.
- To rename the manholes, select the Tables button from the Build ribbon. Select the Junctions tab in the Tables dialog and turn on all the tick boxes. Enter the new names below Click OK to apply the changes.
- Plan colours can be changed for better visibility. Right-click on the Plan view and select Display Settings. It is also possible to lock layers when you are happy with their location.
- Next, we will add the other part of the branch line. Using the Add Network button on the Build ribbon, add in a branch line from the top right downwards adding on to MH8. Click the Inlet icon at the bottom of the popup. This will connect the new branch line to the existing inlet rather than creating a new inlet.
- Our catchment areas can be defined. We could click Build > Add Inflow > Catchment Area and trace them using the Snap tool as before. However, these Area areas are already part of the CAD drawing as polygons so for speed we will load this layer.
- You may have already noticed that many import options are duplicated on the Import Ribbon and the right-click menus in the Tree View. Right-click on the CAD Data layer and select Import Inflows.
- Locate the same CAD file as previously and then click Next.
- Click Deselect All then turn on the Areas layer and click Next again.
You can leave the default Catchment Area template selected and click Finish.
- The areas will automatically be assigned to the upstream of each branch. To move the icon, Click with the left mouse button and hold down the Shift key on the keyboard to drag it separately to the area Outline. The Catchment Areas can be renamed if needed.
Flow Paths are an important consideration in InfoDrainage. Profile Views are shown in terms of Flow Paths. Flow Paths are automatically created when using the Add Network tool or Add Train tool. These paths can also be defined manually by right-clicking the Flow Paths from the Tree View and selecting Add, and then selecting the objects that form the flow path. These can be added indivually, or by selecting the US and DS objects only.
It is useful to see how the network will sit in conjunction to the landscape around it. Right-click on the Train Flow Path that was automatically created and select Show Profile.
This allows us to navigate a Flow Path and see where the pipe and manhole locations are. It is quite clear that the design is not optimised as there are some pipes that will be flowing upstream. We can use the Network Design Wizard to size pipes and design the network to our default specifications.
Network Design Wizard
- Go to the Preliminary Sizing Ribbon > Network Design Wizard.
- Select Train and click Next. The Branchline will automatically be included in the sizing. If our Flow Profile was not yet specified or needs editing we could use the Add Flow Path tool to add it from the Plan.
- In Flow Criteria, click Create New. Use the drop-down to select FSR, and then the + create the rainfall data.
- From the Parameters tab, the M5-60 and R can be entered, additionally you can use the map to select rainfall data for a location. Give your data a name (e.g. My FSR), then enter values of 20 for M5-60 and 0.4 for Ratio R. Select both Summer and Winter for Storm Profile.
- Click the Return Periods tab. For this example, use a return period of 1, 30 and 100 + 20% Increase Rainfall. Enter the data as below in the appropriate cells and ensure the Use box is checked for all Return Periods.
- Go to the Storm Durations tab and click the Default button. Click OK to close the form and create the rainfall record. We could create multiple rainfall records, for example to run the analysis for FSR and FEH storms.
- Check that a Return Period of 1 is selected in the Network Design Wizard. This is the return period we are going to design our pipes to meet the no surcharge criteria. We will use the 30 and 100 year return periods for simulations later on. Click Next.
- Under Design Options, notice that there is the input box of Min. Cover Depth (m). Ensure it is ticked and set to 1.2 m. Click Next.
The Network Design Wizard will adjust attributes of the pipes to try and meet our Design Criteria.
- In the Summary of Changes we can review the two tabs to decide if we are happy with the updates made. Orange cells indicate a value has been changed. The previous value can be viewed by hovering over any cell. If values do not meet the design criteria, then a warning triangle will appear next to the value in question, you can hover over these warnings to see which criteria have not been met. For this example, these values that do not meet the criteria are related to slope / velocity because the design is following the surface profile. This is acceptable for the tutorial. Click Finish which will apply the changes to the design.
- The Network Design Report is shown after the wizard. This gives us information about the pipes that have been sized. Network Design Wizard optimizes the network for a no surcharge criteria for the selected rainfall, this is evident in the connection window as pipe flow is less than capacity. There are buttons at the top of the report to Recalculate Rational Results or Audit against the Network Design Criteria if anything changes without having to rerun the wizard.
