Two methods are available to simulate a pump trip. The first one is to use the Pump Speed Change and the second one is to use pump file. The procedure below describes how to create a pump trip using the pump file.

  1. Click on the Select menu of the Attribute Browser window and then click on the Select Pump button and select the desired pump in the map window.

  2. Click on the Pump Surge Data button on the Surge toolbar. The Pump Surge Data dialog box appears on the screen.

  3. In order to provide pump file information, click on the Pump File Provided option.

  4. Select the pump file of the previously selected pump. You can use the Pump File Selector to help you choose the corresponding pump file.

  5. Assign the Rated Head, Rated Flow, Inertia, Efficiency, Rated Speed, and Initial Speed Ratio. The Pump Inertia Calculator can help to calculate the corresponding pump inertia.

  6. After assigning all pump file parameters, click Create to close the dialog box.

  7. Click on the Pump Operation Change button on the Surge toolbar. The Pump Operation Change Data dialog box appears on the screen.

  8. Select "Trip" as the Disturbance Type and assign the Trip Start Time (seconds). Click on the Create button to close the dialog box.

Note: If pump file information is provided to the Pump Surge Data, you can select the Trip and Ratchet options as well as the Speed option in Pump Operation Change Data dialog box. If the pump file information is not provided, you can only specify the pump speed option. Please be aware that the initial pump flow might be different from the standard simulation, as the surge analysis uses pump file instead of pump curve to calculate flow.
