The Protector Options are primarily used to assign the GIS-based layer to be used for conducting a customer notification. Select which layer contains customer information and specify one of the Customer Selection Method to be employed. The Protector Options can also be used to invoke CityWatch as a method of send customer notification in the event of an emergency situation.

Notification Layer

Select the Notification Layer from the pull-down menu that contains the customer information. The layer must be an active GIS polygon layer containing the customer information. The layer must be added with the Add Data button from the Standard ArcMap toolbar menu. The full path of the selected notification layer is displayed.

Customer Selection Method

Select which layer contains customer information and specify one of the following Customer Selection Methods:

Convex Hull with Percentage of - The Convex Hull technique creates a polygon around all affected pipes, creating a bounding area that is used to intersect with the parcel base to notify affected customers. The percentage specified is a function of the total distance between the furthest affected pipes in the system. Thus, if the total distance between the furthest 2 pipes is 5000 feet, then 2% would create a bounding polygon with an additional 100 feet in all directions.

Buffering with Distance of - The Buffer method creates a polygon shape that represents an offset distance for each affected pipe. In other words, a specification of 20 will create a polygon that is an offset area from each affected pipe, 20 feet on both sides of the pipe.

Field - If the notification layer already has an association with an existing model element, select the data field from the notification layer containing a pipe or node name.

Use CityWatch to Send Notifications

CityWatch is a Notification Server that provides the ability to create, target, and send an instant alert or notification messages to literally thousands of destinations within minutes.  When activated, the Protector is enhanced to automatically generate the information required by CityWatch, so that instant alerts and other important notification messages can be sent to telephones, cell phones, pagers (text/numeric), e-mail addresses, fax machines, wireless devices, PDA's, SMS devices, and more.
